Okay, obviously these generic fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons type stories have setting that is no particular time and place, Erewhon and Nehwon, to quote two famous examples! So I know that the word "wimp" is far too twentieth century really, also I liked the name Derek the Dirk for this character, although I don't think the term Dirk was actually used for a heavy dagger until the renaissance, and the weapon Derek uses with its double-edged blade and cross guard would be a naval dirk (later in the history of our world) rather than a classic highland dirk.
