The whole "love the sinner, hate the sin@ thing is flawed because you focus on the other person's role as "sinner", that is, you focus entirely on the thing about them that you hate.
With reference to homosexuality, I can talk to a gay friend about books, films etc. and be thinking about those things, a homophobe can't do that because, in the presence of a gay, he can't think anything but "Urgh! God! He takes it up the arse!"
